Harm reduction means meeting people where they are, without judgment, and providing the support and resources they need to improve their lives. As someone who once struggled with substance use and contracted HCV due to the lack of resources that exist today, I know the pain of feeling trapped in a cycle of hopelessness and despair. I am incredibly grateful to be in a place where I actively work a recovery program in my daily life, and am now undetectable because of the IDEA program I am blessed to work for today. After many years in recovery, it is a privilege to be able to give back and be of service to others. Helping others find the support they need means the world to me because it reminds me of how far I’ve come, and how much I wish I had the help that’s available now when I was at my lowest. No matter how far someone has fallen, I want them to know that they matter and that recovery is possible. Being part of harm reduction work allows me to help others discover hope and healing, and I’m deeply grateful to be able to help others in a way that once seemed impossible.
